An accomplished veteran, Captain David Schnell was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, a Meritorious Service Medal with three stars, and a Joint Service Commendation Medal during his Navy service.

A United States Armed Forces decoration, the Joint Service Commendation Medal recognizes senior individuals on joint military staffs who have distinguished themselves. Typically, the award honors heroic acts, exceptional achievements, or commendable service.

The award, which was instituted on June 25, 1963, by Secretary of Defense Robert E. McNamara, includes a medal and ribbon. The medal consists of four green conjoined hexagons with gold edging, 13 stars representing the original 13 colonies, and a centered golden eagle. The eagle holds three arrows and has a shield over its breast, representing the seal of the Department of Defense. A center green stripe bordered by stripes of white, green, white, and light blue adorn the award’s ribbon.
